He has a monthly series of articles on intellectual property and other topics in the national edition of Teikoku Databank. Authored a booklet, “Five Pitfalls in Giving a Company Name or Trade Name”. He writes frank newsletter once or twice a month on topics not covered in Teikoku Databank. |

When I was in high school, I came across a movie called “Dead Poets Society”.
It takes place in 1959 at a strict American high school for boys.
John Keating, a teacher with unorthodox teaching methods arrived on the first day of classes and said “tear up your textbook”.
The students who felt puzzled by his words gradually started being drawn to him.
The story is supposed to have a happy ending for the students as they continue to enjoy their lives and pursue their dreams.
However, the story comes to an end after a shocking incident.
This movie made me think deeply about the meaning of my life.
I decided that I wanted to make things.
I studied, worked hard, and entered the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
My major was in nuclear reactor engineering.
I was determined to contribute to Japan through nuclear power generation, but due to the critical accident at Tokai Village , there were no more places to work.
Therefore, I decided to work at the Japan Patent Office to become a patent attorney, which I was originally interested in.
I worked as an examiner at the JPO for 12 years before retiring.
After studying hard, I passed the patent attorney examination, which is a very narrow exam with a 1% passing rate and started working at a major firm in Tokyo.
At that firm, I mainly worked with large corporations and worked my way up to partner, but one day I suddenly realized,
“SMEs need Intellectual Property?!”
It is no exaggeration to say that the ideas and products of SMEs and sole proprietors are for the benefit of large companies.
For example, suppose a SMEs or venture brings an idea for a technology or product to a large company.
The large company will ask another company to process the idea at a lower price.
There are many cases in which even if the contract is successfully signed, the company is forced to deliver the product at a price that is not profitable, or the contract is terminated midway.
However, with proper management of intellectual property, it is possible to prevent such a situation from occurring and to take advantage of negotiations.
I want to somehow support you in the field of intellectual property!
With this in mind, I became independent and established Uemura International Patent Office as a patent attorney specializing in small and medium-sized businesses.
In this way, as I came into contact with SMEs in various industries, I have been receiving more inquiries regarding a wide variety of concerns other than Intellectual Property.
Thinking “If only we could solve all of our clients’ problems at once…”, we established Polaris IP Consulting Co. which has the meaning of the North Star.
“I need to submit these documents to the government to get permission to start this business.”

“How do I get financing for my new business?”
Business owners have various other problems to deal with.
